I am a lecturer, and try to devote my life to that so called profession, but I am still want to be a teacher. Kata orang “bisa jadi pengajar belum tentu bisa jadi guru”.

Pak Awang Satyana, in my point of view, has successfully devoted his life as a teacher. Whoever sit in front of him, he can always find his way to show and tell. He makes geology as simple as calculating groceries.

MENGAJAR ANAK SD SAMPAI PEGAWAI PEMERINTAH

Dari ruang kelas SD, ruang kelas SMP, ruang kuliah S1, ruang kuliah S2, ruang training departemen-departemen Pemerintah Republik Indonesia; dari bocah-bocah SD yang antusias, anak baru gede SMP yang sok cuek, para mahasiswa S1 yang serius, para mahasiswa S2 yang was-was memikirkan tesisnya, sampai bapak-bapak dan ibu-ibu pegawai departemen yang penuh perhatian atau cuek asyik menekan-nekan tombol HP sambil mendengarkan kuliah; saya mengajar mereka geologi.

Guru SD, SMP, para mahasiswa, dan para pegawai itu meminta saya memberikan pelajaran atau kuliah tamu tentang geologi dan/atau hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan eksplorasi dan produksi perminyakan di Indonesia. Maka jadilah saya seorang pengajar tamu dari tingkat SD sampai tingkat pegawai departemen.

Kepada anak-anak SD-SMP saya berikan banyak visualisasi dengan kartun dan film, apa itu geologi. Koleksi batuan saya yang cukup besar saya palu, pecahan-pecahannya saya berikan kepada guru-gurunya buat koleksi di ruang kelas atau laboratorium sekolah. Kepada mahasiswa-mahasiswa S1 dan S2 saya berikan presentasi yang cukup rumit sebab mereka harus serius belajar geologi. Kepada para pegawai departemen yang pernah saya ajar, yang umumnya tidak berlatar belakang geologi, saya berikan presentasi dan visualisiasi yang mudah agar mereka mengerti bahwa mencari minyak itu sama sekali tidak mudah, jadi janganlah memberati eksplorasi dengan berbagai aturan yang dikeluarkan departemen-departemen tersebut.

Saya telah menjadi pengajar tamu sebelas tahun, dari tahun 2003 sampai sekarng, yang saya ajar adalah bocah SD umur 10 tahun sampai pegawai departemen berumur sebaya saya, 50 tahun. Sebanyak 49 kelas telah saya ajar, sebagian besar adalah kelas mahasiswa S1 sebab memang merekalah yang paling memerlukan dan serius belajar geologi.

Mengapa mereka mengundang saya sebagai pengajarnya? Itu harus ditanyakan kepada mereka. Saya tak tahu jawabannya. Tetapi yang lebih penting adalah mengapa saya mau mengajar mereka? Dan saya punya jawabannya: sebab ilmu itu bukan untuk dikuasai sendiri, bagikanlah. Dan, saya ingin menjawab tantangan seorang pengajar yang baik, yang bisa menerangkan dengan baik kepada anak SD sampai gurubesar.

Berikut adalah judul-judul kuliah/pelajaran geologi atau yang berhubungan yang pernah saya berikan ke 49 kelas dari 2003-2014. Banyak geologist yang bisa mengajarkan seperti yang saya ajarkan, hanya memerlukan kepedulian.***

Roundabout to save water

“Water is the driver of nature” (Leonardo da Vinci)

Dear friends

Have you ever been to Blue Mountain Sydney? You must have seen this roundabout. But you may have missed this information.

If you did see the roundabout, you may not think that it is actually a water tank down below. It collects rain water flowing on the near by street. In other words, it is a rain water harvesting system. The collected water then is filtered and disinfected before distributed to toilet flushing facilities. Neat huh.

Now since I am a proud Bandung citizen. Let’s count how many roundabouts in Bandung. This is an example of roundabout. You know perfectly where it is right, and you must aware of how fast the run off flows around it at rainy days.

Let’s count how many of them we have in Bandung and count how much rain water and groundwater we can save.

You also must aware that water management is clearly described in Al Quran (Quran 16:65). See point no 4 at this website (theecomuslim.com).

So it’s doable.

It’s all about digital foot print. Nowadays scientists are valued from their digital foot print. It’s not real until you make it online. Web crawlers like Google (google.com or scholar.google.com) has their own methodology to identify new scientific entries and add them to their database. At many times, they can’t read information from Facebook wall.

  1. DAFTAR MAKALAH PERTEMUAN ILMIAH (1993 – JULI 2014)

    Beberapa teman menulis pesan melalui FB menanyakan judul-judul makalah ilmiah yang pernah saya tulis dan publikasikan di berbagai pertemuan ilmiah di Indonesia maupun Luar Negeri antara tahun 1993-2014.

    Inilah daftar lengkap 90 makalah tersebut yang ditulis dan dipublikasikan selama 21 tahun antara tahun 1993-2014. Sebanyak 73 makalah dari 90 makalah ini, saya adalah penulis utamanya. Dan sebanyak 78 makalah merupakan makalah lengkap/full paper, sementara 12 lagi berupa abstraknya saja.

    Makalah-makalah ini dipublikasikan pada setiap buku atau CD/DVD proceedings pertemuan-pertemuan ilmiah tersebut. Saya tentu memiliki semuanya, baik paper prints maupun file digitalnya. Beberapa makalah ini bisa diakses melalui beberapa blog yang dikelolola kawan-kawan saya. Saya biasanya membagikan beberapa puluh makalah ini kepada para peserta kursus-kursus saya, disesuaikan dengan tema kursus.

    Untuk teman-teman yang memerlukan memelajari satu atau dua makalah ini, tetapi tak bisa mengakses makalah-makalah ini dengan cara di atas, atau tak menemukannya, bisa menghubungi saya. 

    Kelak makalah-makalah ini akan dibukukan secara tematik, atau di-DVD-kan bersama publikasi-publikasi saya yang lainnya (masih ada 250 publikasi di luar daftar ini berupa artikel-artikel di berbagai jurnal, bahan-bahan presentasi kunci/keynote di berbagai seminar, bahan-bahan kuliah tamu di berbagai perguruan tinggi, buku-buku fieldtrip, dan 12 buku manual kursus yang saya jadi instrukturnya). 

    Saya mengontrol dengan ketat apa yang saya lakukan setiap tahunnya, sehingga saya mempunyai daftar detail semua publikasi saya. Itulah KPI (key performance index) yang sesungguhnya. Di kantor, saya dinilai atasan dan sekeliling saya. Tetapi saya juga menilai diri saya sendiri. Saya tidak pernah kecewa dinilai buruk oleh orang lain, tetapi saya akan kecewa bila saya menilai diri sendiri buruk, saya akan tak punya muka untuk memandang diri saya sendiri di cermin (!). Karena itu, saya mengontrol dengan ketat semua produktivitas saya.

Do you use any software to teach #statistics?

This was a question popped by one of my friend at Research Gate. The question then harvests so many responses. So I thought it would be useful if I make a summary out of that.

There are arguments that we should teach statistics, not only using manual calculation but also by using software such as SPSS, Minitab, Stata etc. Most of teachers or lecturers preferred to use manual calculation. What is your expert opinion on this?

 

Software aided vs manual “by-hand” calculation

As a start, several participants would use statistic software as part of the “must-have” computer skills for their students and graduates. They are also aware of the needs of statistician with sufficient computer skills in today’s job market and industries. A few others would argue that teaching statistics has never been only about the software. It is the understanding through manual (by hand) analytical skill that counts. Although they are also aware of the job market’s needs.

“Point-clicker” vs “Command-liner”

Several answers mentioned the list of major statistics software, like SPSS, SAS, and Minitab. Some also mentioned Statistica, JMP, as their practical software for students. The participants choose them because they are user friendly on the basis of menu-driven and point-click. Some participants are looking for statistic software that can be developed or provide a robust development environment. Therefore they choose “command line” applications such as: Stata, MathLab, and R. To the command-line fans, a list of reproducible commands reflects the statistics algorithm that have to be understood by their students. They thought that the command line is their way to mimic manual (by hand) technique but in robust way. They reluctantly move their way to the point and click software as it is not reproducible. However these “command-liner” also admit that at some level, menu-driven apps are easier to learn as they don’t have a steep learning-curve.

While experts from the “point and click” side defend that their stat apps are also support reproducibility. They just need to make more graphical tutorials, that they admit can’t be as easy as command-line tutorial.

However, both sides agree that students are frequently use sophisticated software without sufficient prior learning of the basics. They tend to choose them based on the “cosmetic” features. Proprietary software are very expensive for universities as mentioned by experts from developing countries, as well as from the wealthy countries.

Di tengah kehikmatan Idul Fitri tahun ini, saya coba merenung. Di usia saya yang menjelang 40 tahun, saya sudah berbuat apa. Post di wall Facebook Awang Satyana, membuat saya merenung lebih keras, sudah menghasilkan apa saya ini. Berikut adalah salah satu bentuk renungan saya.
Berawal dari pahatan simbol-simbol di atas batu, berkembang menjadi inskripsi di atas daun papirus, hingga menjadi aksara di atas kertas, buku telah hadir dalam bentuk yang lain, koleksi. Ya koleksi buku sudah menjadi kata benda tersendiri, seperti juga kata-kata mengkoleksi buku sudah menjadi kata kerja tersendiri.
Tidak hanya dihadirkan sebagai deretan ensiklopedia yang menjadi koleksi penghias dinding ruangan, tapi buku untuk beberapa orang adalah sejarah dan perjalanan hidup.
Mau contoh? Kalau kita lihat koleksi rak buku seseorang,  kita bisa lihat, adakah nama seseorang itu tercantum dalam koleksinya. Kalau iya, maka anda sudah menemukan satu contoh koleksi buku yang menjadi catatan perjalanan hidup.

Adakah kawan setia yang rela ikut dipenjara saat kita dipenjara? Tidak ada, kecuali buku. Yang harus ditakuti sebenarnya bukan bedil sebab bedil hanya menjalankan tugasnya, bukulah yang harus ditakuti sebab buku bisa menggerakkan sebuah perang, membuat bedil berbicara.

Kulkas boleh kecil, tetapi rak-rak buku tidak boleh, kalau bisa semua tembok ditutupi rak buku. Kalau tidak ada rak-rak buku yang besar, bagaimana lebih dari 8500 buku ini akan ditampung?

Lalu harus ada penerangan yang cukup, meja dan kursi serta sofa meskipun sederhana, untuk bekerja berpikir, menganalisis, menulis dengan nyaman, atau membaca dengan santai.

Mengumpulkan buku adalah perjuangan lebih dari 2/3 hidup saya. Saya memulainya 35 tahun yang lalu sebagai anak remaja berumur 15 tahun. Saat SMA, saya sudah punya 2000 buku, 75 % buku loak. Itulah koleksi buku- buku saya yang pertama. Kini buku-buku saya ada sekitar 8500 buah, dari berbagai ilmu, dari banyak bahasa.

Saya punya kamar sendiri pertama kali saat SMP dan sekeliling dindingnya adalah rak buku, kecuali sedikit yang kosong untuk jendela. Kini rumah saya banyak yang dindingnya ditutupi rak buku. Pengalaman masa kecil dikelilingi buku, saya hadirkan juga pada masa saya dewasa.

Buku adalah guru dan kawan saya yang paling setia, mereka telah dan akan selalu memberikan ilmu pengetahuan dan penghiburan yang luar biasa. Terlalu banyak membaca dan belajar sendiri membuat saya malas meneruskan sekolah formal setelah S1. Cukup S1 saja, 25 tahun yang lalu. Tetapi saya tak pernah berhenti belajar dan berkarya, dari 25 tahun yang lalu sampai sekarang, dan kelak sampai ajal menjemput.

Suatu hari bertahun-tahun yang lalu, isteri saya pernah bertanya, mau dikemanakan buku-buku ini bila saya mati? Anak-anak saya suka membaca tetapi tak seekstrem ayahnya, apalagi saya membaca buku apa saja, dalam beberapa bahasa. Saya juga belum melihat ada junior saya yang kepadanya saya dengan yakin bisa menurunkan semua ilmu dan buku-buku saya. Beberapa junior yang telah saya didik secara pribadi selama minimal lima tahun dan saya amati juga sikap dan minatnya, pernah saya tanya, dan ternyata mereka semua menjawab dengan jujur: tak sanggup untuk meneruskan seperti yang saya lakukan. Hm… saya pun tak bisa menjawab pertanyaan isteri saya itu.

Dari sekitar 8500 buku itu, banyak yang telah saya baca, tetapi banyak juga yang belum saya baca. Saya senang memikirkannya, artinya masih banyak guru yang akan memberikan ilmunya kepada saya, masih banyak kawan yang akan menemani hidup saya sampai dua puluh tiga puluh tahun ke depan andaikan Tuhan masih memberikan nyawa untuk saya. Buku adalah guru dan kawan saya yang luar biasa.

Bertualang, mengembara di antara lembar-lembar buku, di berbagai dunia, dari berbagai masa, adalah perjalanan yang mengasyikkan juga mendebarkan. Pikiran kita bisa saja tertawan di satu sisi di satu masa, yang tak pernah terjadi di perjalanan nyata.

Hormat saya kepada semua penulis, penerbit, pembeli dan pembaca buku. Mari cerdaskan diri kita dengan membaca.

How to build a geoscience presentation (part 1)

Geoscience has been placed as a rocket science, due to its complexity. The audience is considered to be very specific.

I mad these slides for my undergrad (and also my master students) in Bahasa Indonesia. It contains a few notes on how to make a worthy geoscience presentation.
